The Bpi gives away a part of the materials that it withdraws from its collections.

Which are the documents concerned?

Books and magazines, but excluding any audio-visual material.

What kind of materials?

The "weeding out" policy is based entirely on the Bpi's documentation policy which is laid down in the Documentation Policy Charter (PDF file).
To know in which fields a significant number of materials will be withdrawn, one can consult the annual "weeding out" programme.

Various lists of works are also published in the "Comment Choisir" section.

N.B.: These lists are selective and do not include all the materials that will be "weeded out". Please contact us for more detailed information.

 Physical condition of the materials

As new or used.

All the documents (magazines as well as books) are equipped with a permanent anti-theft device. Libraries that have anti-theft barriers should allocate these documents for on-the-spot consultation. They can also mark them with a distinctive emblem that allows these documents to be taken out in spite of the alarm of the anti-theft barrier.

Who can benefit from this offer?

It is aimed at French organisations that wish to use these materials in the framework of an activity that benefits the community:

  • encyclopaedic or specialised libraries, documentation centres
  • French literacy or home-tuition organisations
  • French organisations that have a cultural objective.

How can one benefit from it?

An agreement concerning the donation of books is concluded between the Bpi and the partner organisation.

The organisation concerned can:

  • either choose the materials on the spot
  • or delegate the selection of the materials to the Bpi, providing it with guidelines about the materials in which the organisation is interested.
