You are a foreigner, working as a librarian or studying library science, and you want to know how libraries are managed in France, to exchange experience with your French colleagues in a specific area of library work, or you simply want to know more about the library system in France. The Bpi can certainly propose a training course or a programme that meets your needs.

The "My Profession: Culture" Programme

The "Profession Culture" Programme was initiated by the Ministry of Culture & Communication in 2003 and is based on a partnership with the public establishments that it supervises. It is designed for foreign professionals in charge of a department or project in the establishment where they work.

The Programme seeks to promote the development of co-operation projects and the creation of lasting exchange networks between the public establishments depending on the Ministry of Culture and Communication and their foreign partners, as well as between public libraries in France and their foreign colleagues.

In consultation with the establishment that will receive them in France, the candidates must therefore present a solid project based on an exchange of knowledge and know-how.

Where the course takes place:  at the Bpi (Paris), or in another library in France

See the full description of the "Profession Culture" Programme (content, modalities and contacts).

The "Courants du Monde" Programme

Each autumn, in the framework of the "Courants du Monde" ('World Currents') Programme, the Bpi, the educational advisor of the Maison des Cultures du Monde, proposes a choice between two kinds of training:

  • A group course, in partnership with the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF).
This course of three weeks on a specific current theme in the field of library management is organised for a dozen directors or professionals drawn from national libraries and large public or university libraries.
  • Cultural Stays
The Bpi proposes individual programmes for "Séjours Culture" trainees, in the form of meetings, encounters and visits to cultural establishments.

Where the course takes place:  at the Bpi (Paris)

See the full description of the programme (content, modalities and contacts).

Individuals traineeships

The Bpi prepares a specific programme according to the profile of each trainee and their expectations.
Those who can participate in such a course are:

  • foreign professionals working in libraries or in the documentation field,
  • foreign students pursuing a university course in library science or in information sciences (training course at the end of their studies to obtain a diploma).

Where the course takes place:  at the Bpi (Paris).
